KIWI Rail Inter Islander Temporary Ferry Terminal Project: Ensuring Seamless Travel During Terminal Renovations


During the renovation of the Inter Islander ferry terminal in Picton, KIWI Rail required a temporary facility to maintain uninterrupted ferry services across the Cook Strait. This temporary terminal was essential to accommodate travellers while the new terminal was under construction.​

Location: Picton, New Zealand​

Structure Dimensions: 15.00m (width) x 65.00m (length) x 4.20m (height)​

Purpose: Temporary ferry terminal to facilitate passenger services during the main terminal's renovation​

Key Features & Customisations


  • Modular Frames with Thermo Roofing System: Provided a flexible and insulated structure, ensuring passenger comfort in varying weather conditions.​

  • Guttering System: Efficient rainwater management to maintain a dry and safe environment for travellers.​

  • Unmodified Wall Panels: East-West sandwich walls measuring 4.20m in height and 5.00m in length, utilising Iso terminal panels for structural integrity.​

  • Recessed Door Entrance: A modified modular structure featuring sliding glazed doors, offering an inviting and accessible entry point for passengers.​

  • Window-Modified End Wall Panels: South-North sandwich walls with a roof crest height of 4.20m and a width of 7.50m, incorporating floor-to-2.04m windows to allow natural light and enhance the passenger experience.​

  • Modified Roller Door End Wall Panel: Inclusion of roller doors and modified wall panels on the North-South end walls, with a roof crest height of 4.20m and a length of 7.50m, facilitating easy access for operational needs.​


Project Success


The temporary terminal was successfully implemented and has been operational since June 2023, effectively handling passenger and luggage services. This solution ensured that ferry operations continued seamlessly during the renovation period, minimizing disruption to travellers and maintaining the vital connection between New Zealand's North and South Islands. ​


The project's success demonstrates the adaptability and efficiency of modular construction in addressing infrastructure challenges, particularly in transportation sectors requiring continuous operation during facility upgrades.
